NDIS Funding Categories Explained: Where Does the Money Go?

If you’ve ever looked at an NDIS plan and felt overwhelmed by categories and budgets, you’re not alone. Understanding how funding is structured is key to making the most of your plan.
NDIS funding is typically divided into three main categories:
1. Core Supports
This is the most flexible category and covers everyday needs, including:
- Assistance with daily activities (showering, dressing)
- Transport support
- Consumables (continence products, etc.)
- Community participation
Participants can often move funds within this category depending on their needs.
2. Capacity Building Supports
This category focuses on long-term independence and skill development. It includes:
- Therapy services
- Employment support
- Training and education
- Improved relationships and social skills
Unlike Core Supports, funding here is more structured and cannot usually be moved between subcategories.
3. Capital Supports
This covers larger, one-off investments such as:
- Assistive technology (e.g., mobility equipment)
- Home or vehicle modifications
These supports are typically more strictly defined and require clear justification.
Why Understanding Categories Matters
Misunderstanding funding categories can lead to underutilized plans or rejected claims. Participants who understand their budgets can:
- Maximize their funding
- Avoid unnecessary out-of-pocket costs
- Plan more effectively for long-term goals
If you’re unsure, working with a support coordinator can make a significant difference.
